Putting two adventurers together can be a little crazy. If one adventurer marries another adventurer… well, then life gets interesting. Let me take you back to the first time Chris and I went out to dinner. It wasn’t a planned date per-say.
I needed help with creating a website so I thought I would call Chris to help me with something I “couldn’t figure out”. But the thing is, I really didn’t. I had someone ask me a bunch of questions that I didn’t know so I thought I would just re-use those questions to get some one-on-one with Chris. I set up shop at Starbucks in Broadripple AND had set up a time for my best friend Jaime to “just randomly come into Starbucks for coffee and see us”. For those of you know how nervous Chris made me, that seems about right. Trying to look cool I double checked- clear view of the front door, cool hipster coffee, glasses to make me look smart/sexy. Okay, I was ready. Chris came striding in with his debonair walk and I almost fell apart. We chatted for awhile before Jaime in her matching running suit burst through the door. “Oh HEYYYYY guys! Fancy meeting you here!” Chris totally knew it was planned and I’m pretty sure he knew I made up the website stuff to get him to come. But I’m not the only one who was smitten. Annalise (who’s boyfriend-now fiance!-lived with Chris) texted me while I was waiting for Chris and asked “Umm… are you meeting up with Crash (Chris’s nickname)? I’ve never seen him move so fast in my life. He got a call, ran upstairs, changed and flew out the front door!” I smiled with my face bright red. After Jaime left, Chris asked if I would like to grab something to eat. We then walked down to a Greek restaurant… I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it.
While eating Chris told me how he always wanted to travel the world. Circumstances had kept him Indianapolis and he just knew he was meant to see so much more of the world. As someone who had traveled and studied in Belize and twice in Germany, I just stared at him. Is this guy for real!? He is sexy, smart and wants to travel the world??? We made lists of places we would like to see. For the following weeks we would email each other travel ideas and photos of places we had never been. He almost seemed too good to be true. I had always wanted a life without borders. With someone who loves culture and traveling as much as I did.
Fastforward three years and he is my husband. We are sitting in our studio apartment in Hawaii making plans for our next steps in our life.
Chris: “Should I buy them?”
Alicia: “One-way tickets to Tokyo?! Yes.”
Chris’s cousin Apryl lives in Yokosuka, Japan where she is stationed with her husband who is in the Navy. Apryl had invited us to come stay with her a long time ago. We never really thought it would be possible. Apryl found out right before our wedding that she was pregnant with TWINS! How exciting! So we thought that with her pregnant we should take Japan off our list. One day last month she pops up on Skype and wants to know if we are still thinking about coming. We were surprised and we told her that we knew she had a lot going on and we didn’t want to interfere. She has had a hard time with morning sickness (and all that fun pregnancy stuff) and she said she would love the distraction. We told her we would have to work through some logistics for us to be able to work from Japan. Apryl already had everything solved. Two desks, mainland phone number, you name it. Well, okay then. Chris and I spent a week discussing what our plans should be. The only thing we knew we had to do was be in Indiana in March for my best friend Annalise’s wedding.
Sooooo Chris sat in front of his computer with the mouse of the purchase button. Next thing we knew we received confirmation of the next big thing in our lives! We leave December 28th. And we are staying for two months! After that we are flying to Indiana for a great Larkin-Ball wedding! After that we have decided to settle down somewhere within driving distance of our parents. As of now, we have decided that Bradenton, Florida is where we will call home. Chris’s brother and his family live there. We have a long list of things we want in where we call home. I could do another post on the process of where we want to “settle down” what environment we want for our kids, etc. BUT this post is about JAPAN!!!
Our first priority while we are there is to continue working seamlessly. Our clients are so important to us and we want to make sure they are completely taken care of. Next we want to see and do everything we can. We want to soak in the culture and learn things that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. We’ve talked about how this extended stay will help us professionally and personally. Chris has already started Rosetta Stone trying to learn basic Japanese. It comes much easier to him than me. I just need to make sure I know “restroom”! Just kidding, I love learning 🙂
While we will miss Hawaii so very much, we are ready to take on this next adventure then head to the mainland to make our nest. Hawaii has changed our lives. The friends we have made, the things we have learned, the opportunities that have risen are unforgettable.
I used to lay in bed at night and wonder what it would be like to travel the world with Christopher Courtney. Now I know.
